The Louvre

Built: 12th-20th Centuries

The Louvre is the most famous museum in the world and is housed in a palace with medieval origins. The museum contains treasures from all over the world. France's rulers have all added to the Louvre and it's been built up from the 12th Centrury. The famous glass pyramid, designed by IM Pei, was commissioned by François Metterrand and opened in 1989 - it now acts as the entrance to the Louvre. The Louvre Palace was completely dedicated to museum space in 1981. The Louvre is famous for housing the Mona Lisa.
