info Westminster Abbey is the result of a process
of development spanning the 13th to 16th centuries. It has
been the setting for every Coronation, bar two, since the
coronation of William the Conqueror in 1066. It is a burial
place of kings and queens, and of the famous and great and
there are over three thousand people either buried or memorialised
here.
Westminster Abbey, or to call it by its correct name, The
Collegiate Church of St Peter, Westminster, is unusual amongst
churches in England in being a 'Royal Peculiar'. This means
it is under the jurisdiction of the crown and not within any
diocese. Today it is still a church dedicated to regular worship
and to the celebration of great events in the life of the
nation.
