info Built in 1911, the Victoria Memorial sits in
front of Buckingham Palace. The 82ft edifice was designed
by the sculptor Thomas Brock and its surround by the architect
Aston Webb. The memorial is made form white marble and contains
a 13ft statue of Queen Victoria which faces away from Buckingham
Palace, eastwards up The Mall. The statues on the other 3
faces of the monument represent Truth, Justice, and Motherhood.
The monument is surmounted by a gilded figure of Victory accompanied
by Constancy and Courage. The central portion of the monument
is surrounded by fountains with bronze figures representing
the arts and other subjects. |
