Tower 42 was originally called the National Westminster Tower. Construction begain in 1971 and the Nat West Tower was officially opened by the Queen in 1981. It was the head office of the National Westminster bank until 1992 when it was bombed by the IRA. Standing at 600 feet it was the tallest building in Europe until 1991 when it was supersceded by 1 Canada Water (Canary Wharf) in London's Docklands. The building is now known as Tower 42 and is a private building providing office space.
