The Royal Mews is a working department of the Royal Household and it is here where all State vehicles, including the Gold State Coach used for Coronations, are kept and maintained. George III moved his carriage collection from a site near Charing Cross to this location in 1760. In 1820 his son, George IV set about transforming the then Buckingham House into a Palace and had the Royal Mews redesigned concurrently.

The original Queen's Gallery was constructed out of the ruins of the former private chapel (on the west front of Buckingham Palace), which was destroyed by a German bomb in 1940. The Queen's Gallery is a small exhibition space open to the public in which changing exhibitions are mounted to display works of art from the Royal Collection.
