More info

Built in 1745 to house the old palace guards, Horse Guards was built on the site of the old guardhouse for the 16th century royal palace of Whitehall. The Queen's Life Guard has been mounted here since 1660 and is still present as Horse Guards remains the official entrance to St James's Palace and Buckingham Palace. Before the opening of Trafalgar Square in 1841, the only access to St James's and Buckingham Palace was through Horse Guards as The Mall was closed at both ends.

The mounted sentries are changed hourly and the full Guard Changing ceremony occurs daily. Horse Guards Parade is also the setting for the annual Trooping of the Colour which takes place on the Saturday closest to the Queen's Official birthday on 6 June.
