Chelsea flower show 2003

The Chelsea Flower Show is the world's most popular and renowned flower show. The best in gardening and horticulture is brought together in one place for one week in May. This year's show ran from 20 - 23 May 2003 and was set in the gounds of the Royal Hospital, Chelsea, London. I only had a ticket for two and a half hours but managed to get some good shots of some of the beautiful plants, flowers and gardens that were on display.

Icelandic poppies

I'd only ever seen red poppies until I came across this extremely vibrant display. This is a selection of Iceland poppies, verbascums and violas as well as other border plants.

The colours of the flowers on this stand were absolutely fantastic.

Auricula

These beautiful wee flowers are only a few centimetres in diameter. They're so simple yet so beautiful. These ones are known as self-show auriculas.

A selection of trees, shrubs and herbaceous perennials.

Roses

Roses come in such a huge variety of shapes and sizes and there were plenty of different types of roses to satisfy the most discerning rose lover.

Carnivorous plants

These strange-looking carnivorous plants are set in surroundings which reflect their natural habitat.

There were so many fabulous poppies.

White lillies

I love lilies, particularly white ones.

Coloured lillies

This array of lillies of various colours looked fantastic.

Purple and white lillies

These lillies are known as pink trumphators.

White lillies

Some more beautiful white lillies. The brown stamen look great against the white trumpets.

Tropical

I think these plants come from somewhere in the Caribbean. They looked like they were made of plastic.

Birds of paradise

Even though this flower has become somewhat ubiquitous in every office reception, I still think it's pretty impressive.

Tulips

I particularly like the colouring on these yellow and red tulips.

Tulips

There was a huge range of tulips at the flower show. I really like the ragged edges of the purple tulips.

What a great selection of colours in these tulips.

Garden sculpture

The expression on his face made me laugh.

Garden sculpture

Apparently garden gnomes are not allowed at the Chelsea flower show, but aren't these garden sculptures just a posh equivalent?

Yorkshire Dales hillside garden

This little piece of Yorkshire was probably my favourite show garden. It looked so natural. There was even a stream running under the bridge.

Around the barn a flagged terrace is encircled by cottage garden plants, such as delphiniums, rambling roses, geraniums, dianthus and lupins.

Organic vineyard garden

This was based on a northern Californian organic vineyard.

The garden contains a variety of cover crops such as clover, rye, vetches, peas, oats and wildflowers to attract a diversity of insect life.

A walled garden

This garden was designed to conjure up a Moroccan courtyard. Six clear-stemmed specimen olive trees line the boundary walls. There is an abundance of bulbs, such as alliums, tulips, narcissus, lilies and fritillaries.

These purple flowers are known as Aliums. They are members of the onion family.

Courtyard garden in Cordes

The garden was designed to capture the spirit of a cool, secret courtyard garden in the medieval town of Cordes in Southern France.

View to a future

Inspired by Tuscan olive grove, and designed to give a hint of how the effects of global warming could change the nature of our countryside, which in less than a hundred years might be more like that of the Mediterranean.

Catwalk garden

This garden is an interpretation of a fashion show. Very kitsch!

An old walled garden

Built using eco-friendly recycled materials, this garden measures only 4.5 by 3.5 metres. I thought this garden was very charming and full of character.
